Alex White - Co-director for Electrofringe in 2007/2008
Alex White began making experimental techno and noise in the
late 1990’s under the pseudonym ‘Autoclave’. Since then his practice has
evolved to more abstracted explorations of sound whilst retaining some
recognisable qualities and sensibilities of genre based music. Alex has
performed at many events around Sydney and Melbourne sometimes as part of the
noise duo/trio Fortran.
Since 2003 Alex has created and exhibited video,
installation and sound works for gallery settings. Some of these works have
been included in group-shows at a variety of spaces including; PELT, First
Draft, Wedding Circle, Liquid Architecture 2005 and Art Space. He exhibited in
his first group show in 2006 at PELT gallery and has since organised and
programmed a variety of group video show and audio performance events
throughout Sydney. He completed a Bachelor of Electronic Arts (Honors) at The
University of Western Sydney in 2005 and in 2006 undertook a residency at The
University of Wollongong, teaching and developing interactive media with
performance students.
Since 2005 he has worked with a variety of artists and organisations as a contractor developing and assisting in projects such as; interactive video systems, interactive networked audio systems, DVDs, commissioned video and audio works, live audio for performance and general technical management, brokerage and advice. Alex has worked for the past 10 years in community work and is currently employed as Special Project Officer at Marrickville Youth Resource Centre, developing and delivering creative media and technology based services and programs to young people.
Ben Byrne – Co-director for Electrofringe in 2006/2007
Ben Byrne is a Sydney based musician, curator,
radio producer and writer whose work traverses musical performance and
improvisation, composition, installation, radiophonics and sound theory. Currently working at the Sydney
Conservatorium of Music as a music technology officer, he holds a Bachelor of
Communications in Media Arts (Honours First Class & University Medal) from
UTS and has written articles for several publications, including Realtime Media
Arts.
Aside from his academic studies and work as a writer, he practices extensively
as a sound artist and musician, performing regularly both solo and improvising
with others as well as presenting works in gallery and radio contexts.
Performances include sets at Disorientation,
If You Like Improvised Music We Like You, Impermanent Audio, Liquid
Architecture 7, the Now Now Festival
of Improvised Music and the What Is
Music? festival and he has had works included in dLux Media Art’s dArt exhibitions and the opening exhibition of the
now defunct Pelt in Sydney. He has
worked on a number of radio programs on 2SER, 2MBS and Radio National and has
developed a particular focus on online distribution methods, launching the
Alias Frequencies net label with friend and colleague Shannon O'Neill in 2007.
In addition to his own practice and writing, over the last several years he has worked extensively as a curator/director and, after starting the monthly 'Disorientation' series in Sydney five years ago, has organised and curated numerous events and exhibitions, including Potent at First Draft Gallery in 2006. He was a director of the Electrofringe Festival of Electronic Arts in 2006 (a position which he continues to hold in 2007) and is a founder and director of Liquid Architecture in Sydney.
Cat Jones – Co-director for Electrofringe 2006/2007
Cat Jones is a performer, writer and creator of multi media performance with a strong focus on interactivity. She has extensive experience in arts management, box office and production including The Australia Council, the NSW Ministry for the Arts and the Sydney Festival. Her major solo work catgURL, a unique live performance event integrating technology, has been developed in residence at Performance Space and the Rex Cramphorn Studio in 2001 and 2005 assisted by Playworks, the Ian Potter Foundation and the Australia Council’s Theatre and New Media Arts Boards.
Cat has received numerous grants and scholarships in her development as a performance artist. She traveled to New York in 2002 to attend The Kitchen’s TEXT: As a basis for multimedia performance, which included masterclasses with artists such as Laurie Anderson and Bill T Jones; and Live-Interactive with Troika Ranch Dance Theatre learning to use sensors with interactive software. She was a participant in Time_Place_Space_1, Wagga Wagga, and was awarded a grant from the Ian Potter Foundation in 2004 for the ICUBE-X sensor system to enable her further exploration in the integration of live performance and media.
Her performance credits include TTS: Route 76 and Panopticon (PVI Collective), Steel Fracture (Party Line) and solo’s at Absurd Shorts, Trading Desire and Erotica in That Elusive Thrill series 2000, Queer Bits 1999 & 2000 for One Extra Dance, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and Divine Divas (Edinburgh Fringe). Cat is a professional actor working in theatre, film and television with a BA - Drama, Acting from QUT Academy of the Arts. Film and television credits include Wednesday 2.45pm, The Mormon Conquest, The Last Paperboy, Tunnel Vision, Fat Cow Motel, Murder Call and All Saints.
